We are so proud to award Patrick McIntyre with this years Chiari Cares Scholarship. Patrick is a great example of a Chiari Survivor.
"I still remember vividly crying tears of joy in the backseat of my mother's minivan the day that I was cleared by the doctor to play contact sports. As a little three-year-old kid I had no idea what I was going through at the time. I very well could have sustained permanent brain damage or even died, had my parents not cared enough for me to find the root of my constant headaches and other Chiari symptoms. My parents went from doctor to doctor, hospital to hospital, determined to find out what was wrong with me. Once I was diagnosed with the condition, instead of immediately putting me into surgery, they made sure that my procedure would be performed by only the best surgeon in the best environment possible. Once I was really able to comprehend all that my parents had gone through to ensure my well being, I realized how blessed I was. I believe that my experience as a Chiari patient has shaped me to be the optimistic and grateful person I am today. I know that my life could have very well ended when I was young, so I do my best to go through my life with that "glass half full" mentality.
To me, my Chiari Malformation was a blessing in disguise because it allowed me to realize how blessed and well off I am to have the family I do. The scar on the back of my head will be a constant reminder of how lucky I am and will lead me to stay positive in the hardest of times both in school and at work."
2020 Chiari Cares Scholarship will be available January 2020
